tomber dans le panneau
“to fall into the panel”
Meaning
to fall for a trick
Explanation
Used when someone swallows a lie, a scam or a trick hook, line and sinker, exactly as the trickster hoped.
Example
Il m'a proposé une affaire en or, et je suis tombé dans le panneau.
He offered me a golden deal, and I fell for it completely.
Origin
'Panneau' once meant a net stretched out to snare wild game. Falling into one meant getting literally caught, and the image carried over to being caught out by a con or a lie.
