avoir de la bouteille
“to have some bottle”
Meaning
To have plenty of experience
Explanation
Used for someone with plenty of years or practice under their belt, seasoned the way a good wine improves with age.
Example
À son âge, le chef a de la bouteille et ne se laisse plus impressionner en cuisine.
At his age, the chef has plenty of experience and doesn't rattle easily in the kitchen anymore.
Origin
A calque of the Spanish 'tener la botella'. The Romans gave each other bottles of wine on birthdays, drinking some and storing the rest, so building up a stock over the years came to stand for age and experience.
