Côte d’Ivoire· informal
serré
Meaning
short of money
Elsewhere
fauché
Explanation
Old-fashioned standard French already uses serré for someone stingy by nature. The Ivorian sense is not about character at all, just about the wallet being empty right now.
Example
Je suis trop serré ce mois-ci, on se refait ça la prochaine fois.
I'm skint this month, let's do it again next time.
Origin
The past participle of serrer (to tighten, to squeeze).
