la fin des haricots
“the end of the beans”
Meaning
the end of everything
Explanation
This expression means it's all over, the absolute end, there's nothing left to hope for. Like saying "that's the last straw" in English.
Example
Si on perd ce contrat, c'est la fin des haricots.
If we lose this contract, it's all over.
Origin
The expression appeared in the early 20th century. One popular theory ties it to ships' food stores: beans and ham were the last provisions eaten at sea, so when they ran out, the crew was in real trouble. Another theory says beans were used as betting tokens in family board games, so the end of the beans meant game over.
