Origin
The word ripaille comes from the Old French verb riper (to scrape), dating to the 16th century. It may refer to soldiers scraping their hosts' plates clean. A popular but uncertain legend ties it to Duke Amadeus VIII of Savoy, who retreated to the Château de Ripaille in the 15th century and reportedly hosted sumptuous banquets there despite his monastic intentions.
